Figures from Safe Work Australia show there were 22 work-related notifiable fatalities in January 2017. Of the 22 fatalities, 14 were male workers, three female workers, and five female bystanders.
According to Safe Work Australia, eight of the fatalities involved a vehicle incident on a public road, four were as a result of being hit by moving objects on a public road, three were as a result of a fall from a height while the remaining seven fatalities were from other types of incidences.
The figures show seven fatalities occurred in Transport, postal & warehousing workplaces, two each in Accommodation & food services, Healthcare & social assistance, Construction, Wholesale Trade and Electricity, gas, water & waste workplaces. The remaining workplaces had each one fatality.
The monthly notifiable fatality report provides a national summary of work-related traumatic fatalities that were notifiable to Australian work health and safety jurisdictions. Details of the types of incident involved; the industry of the workplace at which the fatalities occurred; and the industry of the decedent’s employer are also included in the report.
